About IES

Indian Engineering Services Examination,

UPSC (Union Public Service commission) conducts Engineering Services Examination for recruitment in various engineering services/posts in various Government Departments. The recruitment is done for three categories: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. These jobs are considered to be highly reputed therefore a large number of candidates appear for CMSE exam but there are only a limited vacancies (nearly 500-600) so the selection is quite tough. The selected candidates get a handsome pay in addition to several other incentives of Government jobs and job security. The selection through Engineering Services Examination is through two stages: Written Tests & Personality Test. Only the candidates who qualify the written tests are called for personality test. The written tests are of 1000 marks while personality test is of 200 marks.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates applying for Engineering Services Exam should have an engineering degree from a recognized institute or be in their final year. Also candidates with MSc. Degree or equivalent in Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering will be eligible for certain posts only. A candidate should be more than 21 years and less than 30 years of age as on 1st August, 2010. There are relaxations in age limit for various reserved categories. A candidate should be medically and physically fit according to the specified requirements.

Availability of Application Forms:

All UPSC Exams have a common form where a candidate has to choose the exam he/she has applied for. UPSC forms are available in various designated post offices throughout the country. The fee for examination is paid through Central Recruitment Fee stamp.

Important Dates (Tentative):

  • Release of Notification: January 2nd week,
  • Last Date of submission of Application forms: February 2nd week,
  • Dates of Engineering Services Examination: June 1st week,
  • Please note that the dates are only tentative and are not final. The post will be updated as soon as the dates are officially released.

Details of Examination:

The examination is conducted in two parts: Written Tests & Personality Test. Written Tests are of 1000 marks total consisting of 5 papers of 200 marks each. First paper is General Ability Paper consisting of objective type questions from General English and General Studies which includes knowledge of current events, Indian History and Geography. Rest 4 papers are specific to the relevant engineering discipline. Of these first two papers will be objective type and the rest two papers will be subjective type.

For objective type questions each question will have 4 options and there is a negative marking of 1/3rd marks allotted to the question for an incorrect answer.

Personality Test consists of an interview to judge the candidate's knowledge in the relevant engineering field and General Knowledge and other skills and requirements like the candidate's capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.

About JTO

Eligibility: Nationality: Only Indian Nationals would be eligible to apply.

Educational Qualifications:

JTO (Telecom)

Applicant must possess a Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology or equivalent Engineering degree in any of the following disciplines from a recognized engineering college/university:

  • Telecommunication
  • Electronics
  • Radio
  • Computer
  • Electrical
  • Information Technology

Candidates appearing in the final year degree examination may also apply.

JTO (Civil)

Applicant must possess a Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology or equivalent in Civil Engineering from a recognized Institution/University.

Candidates appearing in the final year degree examination may also apply .

JTO (Electrical)

Applicant must possess a Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology or equivalent in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Institution/University.

Candidates appearing in the final year degree examination may also apply.

Age:

The applicant for JTOs (Telecom), JTOs(Civil) and JTOs(Electrical) should not be more than 30 years of age on the closing date for receipt of applications from

candidates. However, this age is relaxable as per standing instructions on this subject for:

  • Govt. servants upto 5 years in accordance with the instructions or orders issued by the Central Govt.;
  • BSNL employees upto 5 years in accordance with the instructions or orders issued by the BSNL;
  • For Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes candidates upto 5 years;
  • For OBC Candidates upto 3 years; For General Category PH candidates upto 10 years ; (for SC/ST 15 years and for OBC 13 years)
  • For certain other categories like ex-servicemen, displaced persons from East Pakistan[now Bangladesh], repatriates from Burma and Ceylon [now Srilanka, residents of Goa, Daman & Diu, persons migrated from Kenya, Uganda, and Republic of Tanzania as per instructions issued by the Central Government from time to time in this regard.
  • For Residents of J&K - Relaxation shall be in accordance with DoP&T's Notification No.15012/7/1991-Estt.(D) dtd. 7.12.2007 pertaining to "Residents of State of Jammu and Kashmir (Relaxation of Upper Age Limit for Recruitment to Central Civil Services & Posts) Rules 1997".

Further in respect of apprentices who have undergone apprentice training in BSNL successfully, there will be following provision:

  • An apprentice will be required to compete in the common competitive examination conducted by BSNL along with other direct candidates and preference to the apprentices over non-apprentices direct candidates will be given only if apprentices secures equal place in merit in select zone and all other eligibility conditions being equal.
  • The apprentices would not be required to get her/his name sponsored by any employment exchange.
  • The apprentices would be entitled to age relaxation to the extent of the period for which the apprentice had undergone training as apprentice in the BSNL.

Mode Of Selection & Nature Of Question Paper

The mode of selection is through an All India Competitive Examination. The examination will be of three hours duration with one Question Paper containing the following three sections:

For JTOs (Telecom)

Section-I : Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-II : Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-III : General Ability Test: 20 Questions

For JTOs (Electrical)

Section-I : Electrical Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-II : Electrical Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-III : General Awareness: 20 Questions

For JTOs (Civil)

Section-I : Civil Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-II : Civil Engineering Stream: 50 Questions
Section-III : General Ability Test: 20 Questions

The Question Paper will be fully objective type with multiple options as answers to each question. The standard of paper in engineering subjects will be that of Engineering Examination of an Indian University.

However, there would be no separate time fixed for attempting the separate sections. Detailed syllabus for JTOs(Telecom), JTOs(Civil) and JTOs(Electrical) appear at Annexures 'B', 'C' and 'D' respectively.

A final call letter/appointment letter will be issued to the candidate after completion of all other formalities.

About PSU's

Engineers who wish to work in PSU's like as ONGC, SAIL, GAIL, MRPL, BSNL, MTNL, DRDO, ISRO, NTPC, NHPC, BEL, BHEL, SAIL, HPCL, MRPL, PDIL, BEML, BARC, NFL and HAL etc. For PSU's you don't really need to study separately in the technical part. Other aspects such as General Knowledge and Aptitude etc. come into the picture in these exams.

The pattern & Syllabus of PSU's are mixture of GATE & IES. The syllabus of different PSU's may vary with minor changes in topics depending upon company profile and current requirements. Now a day's government sectors written examination follow previous year objective papers of IES & gate.

About DRDO-SET (Scientist Entry Test)

RAC advertises on DRDO Website (www.drdo.com & rac.drdo.in) & "The Employment News" (with curtain raiser) for Direct Recruitment of Scientists 'B'. The prescribed Essential Qualifications as mentioned in the advertisement are bare minimum and mere possession of same does not entitle candidates to be called for interview. Where number of applications received in response to an advertisement is large, it is not possible to interview all the candidates. RAC may, therefore, restrict the number of candidates for interview to a reasonable limit on the basis of qualifications/experience/ achievements higher than that of the minimum prescribed in the advertisement or by conducting a screening test named DRDO Scientists Entry Test (DRDO SET).

DRDO SET is conducted on all India bases on 1st Sunday of September every year in order to provide equal opportunity to all students from different educational institutions in view of the increasingly wide variation of marks due to increase in the number of educational institutions in the country. DRDO SET exam is of three hours duration consisting of two sections viz. Section 'A' of 100 questions to test the candidate's knowledge in the subject of their BE / B.Tech (for Engineering discipline) or MSc . (for Science Discipline) and Section 'B' of 50 questions to test the candidate's ability in analytical and qualitative skills, current affairs and general awareness to test the aptitude and scientific knowledge required for Applied Research & Development. Based upon the organization's requirements, DRDO SET is conducted in Engineering Subjects such as Aero, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, Electronics/Electronics & Communication, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Metallurgy etc and Science subjects such as Chemistry, Physics and Math's/ Operations Research/ Statistics etc. These subjects are specified in the advertisement. DRDO SET exam is conducted only for those subjects where vacancies are sizable in number. In cases, where very few vacancies are available, NO SET exam is conducted and the individuals are directly called for the interview. The advertisement generally appears during the month of April / May every year.
